Bridgwater Arts Centre is proud to unveil its new 80th Anniversary Mural, created by South West-based artist Guilherme Luã Pereira, celebrating eight decades of creativity, culture and community at the heart of Bridgwater.
The striking new artwork, installed on the front of the theatre balcony within Bridgwater Arts Centre, has been specially commissioned as a lasting legacy piece to mark the venue’s 80th anniversary year. The mural was officially unveiled during the Centre’s anniversary celebrations on Saturday 10th October, bringing together supporters, volunteers, staff and members of the local community.
Selected following a period of public engagement involving volunteers, the Visual Arts Committee and patrons, Guilherme Luã Pereira’s design draws inspiration from Bridgwater’s distinctive architecture, creating a strong visual connection between the Arts Centre and the town it has served since 1946.

The completed mural combines contemporary graphic elements with references to the building’s heritage, reflecting the creativity, stories and shared experiences that have shaped Bridgwater Arts Centre over the last 80 years. Designed specifically for a public indoor space, the artwork offers a bold and welcoming visual statement for audiences and visitors while celebrating the people who have contributed to the Centre’s success across generations.
Artist, Guilherme Luã Pereira, said:
“This project has been a wonderful opportunity to explore the relationship between Bridgwater Arts Centre and the town itself. I wanted to create a piece that celebrated the building’s history while feeling relevant and engaging for today’s audiences, giving everyone a sense of belonging. The mural is a tribute to the creativity, resilience and community spirit that have defined the Arts Centre for 80 years and I’m honoured to have been part of this milestone.”
Councillor, Irena Hubble, said:
“The completed mural is a fantastic addition to Bridgwater Arts Centre and a fitting tribute to its 80-year history. It captures the importance of the Arts Centre as a cultural hub for our community and provides a lasting symbol of the creativity and talent that continue to flourish here. We are delighted to see the artwork unveiled as part of this special anniversary year.”
Arts Centre Manager, Beccy Armory, said:
“Seeing the mural completed and unveiled is incredibly exciting. From the very beginning, we wanted to create something that honoured our history while celebrating the people who make Bridgwater Arts Centre such a special place. Guilherme’s artwork has achieved exactly that, and we’re thrilled to share it with everyone who visits the Arts Centre. We hope it will inspire future generations and serve as a reminder of the creativity and community spirit that have sustained us for 80 years.”
The mural forms part of Bridgwater Arts Centre’s wider 80th anniversary programme, which celebrates eight decades of arts, performance, participation and storytelling. Throughout the anniversary year, audiences have been invited to reflect on the Centre’s rich history while looking ahead to its future as a vibrant creative space for the people of Bridgwater and beyond.
As a permanent feature within the building, the mural will stand as a lasting legacy of the anniversary celebrations and a visual representation of the Arts Centre’s enduring role in the cultural life of the town.
