Bridgwater Arts Centre has announced a year-long programme of events and activities to celebrate its 80th anniversary, marking eight decades at the heart of the town’s cultural and community life.
The celebrations begin on 10 October 2026 and continue through to autumn 2027, bringing together residents, artists, volunteers, audiences, supporters and partners to celebrate the Arts Centre’s history and help shape its future.
The anniversary comes at an important moment for the organisation. Following Bridgwater Town Council’s acquisition of the building, the Council has continued to invest in and support the venue, ensuring this much-loved cultural landmark remains a vibrant part of community life while developing a sustainable future.

Anniversary Highlights
- 80 Years Exhibition (5-24 October 2026) – An updated exhibition charting the Arts Centre’s history from 1946 to today, featuring new displays and archive sound recordings from Somerset Film.
- 80 Stories (October 2026) – A short film created with Bridgwater & Taunton College students, capturing 80 stories from people connected to Bridgwater and the Arts Centre.
- 80th Artwork Commission (October 2026) – A local artist will create a permanent artwork for the theatre balcony.
- Monthly Heritage Tours (from October 2026) – Behind the scenes tours exploring the building’s history and hidden spaces.
- 80th Anniversary Civic Presentation (10 October 2026) – A special celebration featuring presentations, the premiere of 80 Stories and invited guests.
- Scary Tours (28-29 October 2026) – Somerset Youth Theatre’s popular immersive experience returns for Halloween.
- 80-Year Cinema Season (from December 2026) – A programme of films spanning the decades.
- The Big Bash (Summer 2027) – A revival of the much-loved anniversary street celebration, bringing Castle Street alive with performances, activities and community creativity.
- CIAM 80 (September 2027) – Talks and discussions exploring architecture, the history of Bridgwater Arts Centre and future environmental themes, marking the anniversary of the 1947 CIAM gathering.
Looking to the Future
Alongside the celebrations, the Arts Centre will fundraise for its Take a Chance and Pay it Forward ticket schemes, helping make arts and culture more accessible.
