THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY (12a)
The acclaimed third feature from Julian Schnabel (Basquiat, Before Night
Falls) recounts the remarkable true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby, the
charismatic editor of Elle magazine who, at the age of 43 suffered a
stroke. Left mentally alert, but paralysed except for his left eyelid,
Bauby used his one eye to blink his extraordinary memoir.
“Nothing in Schnabel's career so far has anticipated the sweetness,
sadness, maturity and restraint of this lovely movie (and) for
screenwriter Ronald Harwood the movie is another triumph of responsive,
creative intelligence.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian *****
